girly girls know, it’s all about experiencing not about being perceived is a work about the representation and the recognition of femininity
online through the stereotype of sadness, melancholy, and suffering.
The video, an eternal loop, can be visually divided into two main
sections: in the first part, a character - fully aware of her own
existence in the gaze of the other - performs her own melancholy,
picturing it as embodied stillness and an aesthetization of suffering.
The performativity of the representation is pushed by the length and
stillness of the scene, making this section work as a tableaux vivant.
The second part, instead - characterized by a digital zoom that
changes the grain of the shot - depicts a different scene charged with
ambiguity. The character is taking action on herself by inducing to
throw up, a gesture that could be both linked with an action of self-
harming and rejection through a physical expulsion.
The viewer is left in this space of continuous ambiguity and bounce
where it’s nearly impossible to determine where the threshold
between suffering, performing suffering, and self-liberation happens.
